Media Relations / Reporter Intern

Biola University Communications

Operating out of the Communications section of Biola University's Enrollment, Marketing and Communications department, I was involved in managing media relations, creating and executing detailed PR plans, tracking media coverage, and writing articles and press releases for the university. These are some examples of my written work that was posted on Biola Now, the university's news site.

Articles:

I wrote this article to recap a week-long event called "Sleep Week" that Biola University hosted for the first time ever. It was posted on Biola's news website and then shared via Biola's Facebook.

I wrote this article to announce a new master's program that Biola University is starting in the fall of 2020. It was posted on the main Biola news site, as well as Talbot School of Theology's website, as it is one of their programs. When you visit the homepage of now.biola.edu, it is the feature article.

Press Release:

I wrote this press release to announce the release of Dr. Barry Corey's (Biola University's president's) new book. I previewed a copy of the unreleased book in order to write this, and then I formulated a media list of about 20 journalists through Cision to pitch to, with the goal of securing interviews with Corey. Due to COVID-19, this internship ended right after I pitched to the journalists and this effort had to be put on hold.

Intangible Work Products:

Cision

I used and became proficient in both Cision Comm Cloud and Next Gen. I utilized Next Gen to track monthly media coverage of Biola University, and I used Comm Cloud to build a media list of about 20 journalists to pitch the press release seen above to.

CoverageBook

I was responsible for creating monthly CoverageBook reports for Biola University for the months of December - February. This was used to track where and how Biola was mentioned across media and what the public's sentiment was. I utilized Cision Next Gen to determine which mentions had enough impact to add to the CoverageBook records.

Social Media & Marketing Intern

Special Olympics Southern California

Working entirely remotely as a social media and marketing intern under the communications department, my main responsibilities were creating social media posts for three different social media platforms for two of their accounts. Over the course of my internship, I created over 100+ posts, utilizing Photoshop and a content calendar. I also created several detailed social media campaigns for future events, pitched ideas on how to include TikTok as one of their platforms, and wrote an article on an athlete that I interviewed.

Social Media Posts:

I created several action-based government relations posts encouraging followers to sign a petition for Special Olympics to be included in the CA state budget. These posts were aimed at appealing to emotion and had a very strong purpose.

Most of the posts I made were lighthearted and demonstrated the impact SOSC has. There was also a recent shift in their post strategy, and the goal was to feature our athletes more. I highlighted our athletes in the posts I created by making them the focus of the photos.

Social Media Campaigns:

This was the first social media campaign that I created. I was able to look at past examples of plans for this event in years past and discern what would be good to change, get rid of, or keep the same. I made this plan very detailed because I had so much information on it.

I created this social media campaign for one of their bigger annual events. Because it is a larger event that is key for fundraising, this plan is slightly less detailed so that edits can be made by those with more knowledge of the event, but I provided a base plan for social media posting.

Article:

This is an article I wrote about one of our athletes and her family. I reached out and interviewed them via Zoom, and then wrote a human interest story around my conversation with them. This article was uploaded to wearesosc.org
